The leaders heart and his big toe
The movie Chocolate was pretty good, I know it would have been better to read subtitle and listen in Thai, but thats me. About the mob leader shooting off his toe. I think he did it not because he felt like it, but because when he saw Zin which might be his wife or partner, he loved her in some way. and when she stopped him from shooting the leader of Japan because he found out about her being with him. He was in pain and the truce that they had made at the begining of the movie between the Japanese was already broken from him shooting the other men. So he shot himself in the foot probably to take away the pain, or make it like the guy from Japan shot him, something. So Zen's father would have to leave by order of his elders(or leaders). He did not want to go but to keep him safe Zin asked him to leave. Now later on Zin has Zen and when the leaders new partner, wife, or girlfreind, found out about Zen and told the leader(I forget his name) he pays Zin a visit. Zin is pinned down and the leader talks about his missing toe, how it always reminds him that its gone when he walk, runs, or anything of the sort, and that pain from that missing toe most likely reminds him of Zin which kept him balanced, happy and pain free. and without her its like hes missing his big toe to balance and keep going. So to show her what he feels he cuts her toe off. Now Zin also is reminded of it being gone whenever she walks, stands or anything. Instead of an eye for and eye, or hand for a hand, in this case it would be heart for a heart, but its a toe for a toe. This is what I think the toe sybolized and I hope its understandable. This was a good movie and I love how the dissability that Zen had in others eyes, she turned it into a strength over time.

I completely agree about subtitles. Why do people have such a block against them? Maybe that would make an interesting research project.
I like your ideas about why the "godfather" shot his toe. He could have tried killing the pain in his heart by making some more extreme pain. Have you ever been punched by someone when you complained of a headache, & the person claims it is to help you not feel the pain in your head? I'm not sure that works, but it would be worth looking into. I know changing one's focus can cut down the experience and discomfort of pain significantly.
I was also impressed by whoever said that autistic children can have great strength & tolerance of pain. What is the state of research in this area?
Often parents spank their children, and claim that it will hurt themselves more than the child. As the "godfather" figure shot his toe, you could see it in the families faces, that they were actually hurt more. The family was forced to split up and never talk to each other again. Divorces are hard on children when they grow up, especially developmentally delayed children. Therefore, the godfather shooting his toe, resulted in the family being "spanked" and remembering it forever. Everyone remembers their first spanking, and the second one is even worse, as the mother lost her toe in that second spanking.
yeah thats a great concept, about the being "spanked" and the divorce never really affedted Zen because the father had left before she was even born. but yeah coming to find out who your father was after so long would be rough for Zen to get use to.
I did'nt see the toe being shot off but i agree with alot of what you guys are saying. And yes many times i have heard and told people when they complain about pain somewhere i would ask u want me to hit you in the arm to take your mind off the other pain. I think it is possible for someone to loose sight of pain somewhere if there mind is suddenly altered by major pain in another area. Just like when i went to school to be in SWAT down south they tech certain areas to hit someone in there legs where it will make them colapse. Because these when these areas are hit on the leg lets say your other leg litterally feels bad for the other that is in pain so it also collapses. This is the way they explain the situation but it really does work. It just comes down to the way your body deals with its pain the mind automatically tries to convert its attention away from the pain thats where the saying mind over matter comes from i believe.
