Assignment: Read the essays in ONE of the following groups:
Music & Culture:
Nat Hentoff, "Jazz: Music Beyond Time and Nations," p. 116.
Langston Hughes, "Bop," p. 265.
Gender & Education:
Jon Katz, "How Boys become Men," p. 174.
Deborah Tannen, "Gender in the Classroom," p. 224.
Then, write at least two comments (at different times, not one right after another). I will write one post for each topic, and then I will also add comments as we proceed through the assignment.
Note: If you took your spring break early, and didn't come to class on Thursday, you still need to complete this assignment!

posting a comment on gender issues. In Jon katz How Boys Become Men, what i found particularly interesting is how he showed men actually interact with eachother through insults and playful put-downs. In contrast women tell secrets and usually stay within a clique of well known friends. This happens everywhere, all around us, and yet usually no one even takes notice. Very interesting, good choice Glen.
This is fascinating in another timely way for me, also. I'm reading a book for a class I'm taking, & up for discussion (in an 11th grade class) are the first two paragraphs of Zora Neale Hurston's _Their Eyes Were Watching God_. I'll post them in a little while. I have to head up to the class I'm talking about!
posting second comment on gender issues. I still maintain my opinion that it was very interesting reading. Not that i normally occupy myself reading about gender issues, but i found this assignment rather easy complete. better than complex issues like why women commit fewer crimes than men. see ya tuesday.
My opinion on gender issues is not so much if your male or female, but rather who you are as a person. Alot of things can determine who you are such as how you were raised and where you were raised.Kids who dont have money and might appear dirty in a classroom could be attacked by a female or a male looking to show off in front of there friends. Like i said in my opinion it just depends on who you are as a person and not so much your sex.
My opinion on gender issues after reading the stories is that while both stories made good points, I believe it is not an issue of gender but of how you were raised as a child. I know of women that when they were younger, they were "bullies". I also have friends that interact with each other through insults and put downs, just like men.
