Gender in the classroom

As a women I think gender issues in the classroom are an issue. Men are generally louder and more vocal, and women tend to stay quiet and to themselves. I do not think that is because they are being oppressed by their male counterparts in the classroom. I think for the most part women generally think more before they speak. This maybe as Tannen says because we are more afraid of being challenged, and essentially proven wrong. I think that women in general will not say what is on their mind unless they are sure they are right and it won't be argued out throughout the classroom. For the most part I find this is because they see an arguement as themselves being wrong, instead of just a difference in opinion. I think it is developed early for women to sit back listen and take it all in and then draw your own conclusions. It may stem from being unknown, or not knowing the people you are having a "discussion" with. I know that I myself have no problem debating and arguing topics with smaller groups as opposed to large classrooms. I think that with me it is because you have a better chance of being heard and not interrupted. Maybe thats why women tend to be less likely to speak up, because in my experience when you express a thought a someone is always thinking of what they are goin to respond to you before you have even finished your idea or thought. Maybe people just need to learn to listen. =)

I agree on the listening part. People do need to just sit back more often and take all tyhe info in before jumping out and interupting someone. But no that hardly ever works in a class room, because in a class romm there are still very young minded people. I dont think it really comes down to gender so much in an argument, what i think it comes down to is age, respectfullness towards others, and youth because most of the time when someone that is young has an opinion they cant hold it in it has to be thrown out imedietely. Its like they think they are going to lose train of thought. But on the gender part I think females to voice there opinion as much as men, because they are worried they wont have the right response or argument to counter argue with another. And with men most the time men could give two shits what others think because we will always feel right. And thats where alot of guys have problems because they dont actually sit and think about it, they just jump into any argument where they feel they are right.

I generally agree... Although it doesnt seem to have much of an impact in our class... i feel at least in this english class that the women have no oppositon to speasking up... But it is something that has evolved generation after generation it is almost ingrained into our dna it is slowly changing though...

I agree with you. I feel that men DON"T generally think before they speak. They just assume that they are right automatically and they don't weigh out the consequences of their actions. Men are louder and women; most of the time ARE more reserved.
