Music & Culture:

Nat Hentoff, "Jazz: Music Beyond Time and Nations," p. 116.
Langston Hughes, "Bop," p. 265.

Can you relate to this:
"I was eleven when I first heard jazz.... I was so exhilarated that I yelled in delight" (117)?

Have you ever had an experience with music, or art, or film, where you felt like this?

What about Hentoff's quote from John Coltrane (which you all should give a listen to):
"'The music is the whole question of life itself'" (120).

  2. I feel that way about art. I love to paint and I love to work with clay. The way I feel when I am painting is similar to the way one might feel when they get lost in a book for hours. I can truly understand how a person can get as excited about music. They seem to hear it and feel it in a different way. Different from someone just listens to music.
They get lost in the sound.

  3. I can relate on a few differnt levels. My father is a musician here in NY he plays drums prodomenatly and he is actually in the NYS Country Music Hall Of Fame. I love to go and watch his band play. He is very entertaing and a great drummer. Unfortunatly he now also plays Bass Guitar and seems to like it so he will often play Bass instead of drums although i would much rather watch him play drums.
